Valparaiso University is now accepting applications for the 2007 Summer Chinese Language & Culture Immersion Program (2007 SIP). The program is designed to ready participants for fourth-year Chinese or above and/or its equivalent offered in US colleges. The program features intense, personalized instructions, and integration of language learning with immersion in local culture and society. The total enrollment for the 2007 program is limited to 15. Because space is limited (some seats are allocated to students in VU¡¯s Master of Arts in Chinese Studies Program, ¡°MACS¡±), interested applicants should contact Jamie Haney immediately (Jamie.Haney@valpo.edu, 219-464-5313) for a packet of information and application materials. The deadline to apply for the 2007 program is May 1, 2007, on a first-come, first-served basis.

In addition to the 2007 SIP program for students, and pending approval of a grant from the US Department of Education, Valparaiso University will sponsor a summer program in China for K-12 teachers and/or education majors. More information about the program will follow in early April 2007.

Program

The 2007 SIP is divided into two phases:

Phase One runs from May 28 through June 22, 2007. This four-week section is ideal for participants who have taken two years of college Chinese or its equivalent and who need to solidify their language skills before taking on more advanced study offered in the next phase.

Phase Two runs from June 25 through August 10, 2007. This seven-week component is designed to complete intensified, third-year Chinese that will significantly improve participants¡¯ ability in all four key areas of Chinese language, reading and comprehension, listening, speaking, and writing. Interested applicants can apply for either Phase one or Phase two or both depending on their language skills and needs.

Curriculum

Phase One: Phase One will use Integrated Chinese, Level II as the basic text and a significant number of supplement reading materials drawn from various sources. The weekly instruction includes 10 hours of grammar and intensive reading, six hours of listening and speaking, and 7 hours of group study (used primarily for group projects such as presentations). In addition, there will be daily, 15-20 minutes individual sessions with one of the instructors. Weekends are reserved for language-driven, cultural-learning assignments.

Phase Two: Phase Two will use Step-by-Step Chinese, Intensive Chinese Book 1 and Book 2 as the basic texts. Students with different levels of Chinese may be assigned to different textbooks in the same series for listening/speaking and extensive reading purposes. Weekly instruction includes 10 hours of grammar and intensive reading, 6 hours of listening and speaking, four hours of writing, and 2.5 hours of group study (primarily for group projects). In addition, there will be two, half-hour individual sessions with one of the instructors per week. For the weekends, there will be 2-3 home stays (Friday evening through Sunday afternoon) and two planned language-testing/survival trips to places such as Yellow Mountain and Putuo Island.

Instructors. The 2007 SIP will be directed by Dr. Zhimin Lin, Program Director of VU¡¯s MACS Program. The two instructors are professor Nan Zhang of Zhejiang University of Technology and James Stevenson of Zhejiang University.

Who can apply?

For Phase One, applicants must have successfully completed two years of college Chinese, or its equivalent, by May 2007. For Phase Two, applicants must have successfully completed three years of college Chinese, or its equivalent, by May 2007. Anyone interested in the program (college students and K-12 teachers will be given priority) who meets the above-mentioned criteria is welcome to apply. In addition to submitting the application materials, all applicants will receive a telephone interview to help assess if the applicant is qualified for the 2007 SIP (in terms of language preparation) and/or which phase of study is appropriate for him/her.

Cost and accommodations

The program fee for Phase One is $1,000 USD. The fee includes housing, instruction materials, Chinese entry visa fees, and other program fees such as program-sponsored group activities, etc.

The program fee for Phase Two is $2,200 USD. The fee includes housing, instruction materials, and other program expenses such Chinese entry visa fees, and other program-sponsored activities such as home stays and local trips, etc.
